RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) has deployed 80,026 personnel to tackle forest and land fires, known as karhutla, in several regions across Indonesia. The deployment is aimed at handling the fires and addressing their impacts in various areas.
Head of the TNI Information Center, Brigadier General Muhammad Nas, said tens of thousands of personnel have been placed on standby and deployed to support forest and land fire response efforts across Indonesia.
“The TNI has placed on standby and deployed a total of 80,026 personnel to tackle forest and land fires and address their impacts across Indonesia,” Nas said at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
In addition to deploying personnel, the TNI is strengthening prevention efforts through public education. A total of 1,488 personnel have been deployed as field outreach officers, drawn from various TNI educational institutions and units, including students of the TNI Command and Staff College (Sesko TNI), as well as the Army, Navy, and Air Force Command and Staff Colleges.
The outreach officers will be deployed in the field for one month to educate communities about the dangers of forest and land fires and their impacts on the environment and people's lives. The measure is expected to raise public awareness and prevent forest and land burning, whether intentional or caused by negligence.
To support firefighting operations, the TNI has also prepared facilities and infrastructure, including water sources from boreholes. So far, 316 water-source points have been established and utilized in several regions, particularly because existing water sources are located far from fire hotspots and affected areas.
“We have identified and secured 316 water-source points from boreholes spread across South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Lampung, and Riau. These water sources greatly support firefighting operations,” he explained.
