Kertajati Airport Ready as Alternative Hub After Volcanic Eruption

RRI.CO.ID, Majalengka - West Java's Kertajati International Airport is ready to serve as an alternative hub following regional airport closures. The operational readiness was confirmed in Majalengka, West Java, on Monday, 7 September 2026.

The facility was designated by Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation to handle diverted flights after Mount Anak Krakatau erupted. A series of ash paper tests conducted at the location confirmed that the airport remains completely free from volcanic ash.

This measure comes after volcanic ash forced the temporary closure of eight regional airports across western Indonesia. Affected hubs include Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma, along with several nearby provincial airports.

Governor of West Java Dedi Mulyadi instructed local officials to immediately assist all arriving and departing travelers. The provincial administration focuses on providing essential needs, particularly for traveling infants and elderly passengers.

He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring smooth, safe, and comfortable flight operations throughout this emergency period. His official instructions were issued directly to provincial officers stationed at the Majalengka aviation facility.

“I ask all personnel to go directly to Kertajati to welcome passengers who will depart and arrive at Kertajati,” he said.

Local authorities remain fully prepared to manage increased passenger volume throughout this temporary operational adjustment. Comprehensive coordination continues between aviation personnel and regional officers to maintain high service standards for international travelers.
