Gus Dur and His Legacy of Pluralism in Indonesia

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – 7 September marks the birth anniversary of K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid, widely known as Gus Dur, an Indonesian Muslim leader remembered for his contributions to democracy, humanity, and pluralism. Born in Jombang, East Java, in 1940, Gus Dur went on to become Indonesia’s fourth president, serving from 1999 to 2001.

For Gus Dur, diversity was more than a social reality to be acknowledged; it was an essential part of national life that had to be protected collectively. His philosophy framed differences in religion, ethnicity, culture, and perspectives as part of the strength of Indonesia’s pluralistic society.

His legacy was also reflected in his willingness to defend minority groups and challenge discrimination. Gus Dur demonstrated that tolerance should go beyond simply acknowledging differences, requiring concrete efforts to ensure that all citizens have equal space and rights in society.

Gus Dur also connected pluralism with democracy and humanity. In his view, democracy was not merely about political processes, but also about respecting freedom of thought, citizens’ rights, and the ability of people to live together without imposing their beliefs or interests on others.

These ideas have given Gus Dur’s legacy relevance beyond Indonesia. In 2013, for example, the United States Embassy in Indonesia joined in paying tribute to Gus Dur highlighting pluralism, diversity, and democracy alongside the legacy of American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

At a time when the world continues to face polarization, discrimination, and tensions rooted in identity, Gus Dur’s vision of living together in diversity remains relevant. His legacy offers a reminder that unity does not require differences to disappear, but requires societies to create shared spaces where differences can coexist peacefully and with dignity.

Remembering Gus Dur on the anniversary of his birth, therefore, is not only about honoring a former Indonesian president, Muslim scholar, and intellectual. It is also an opportunity to reflect on pluralism, tolerance, democracy, and humanity as values that continue to require commitment, both in Indonesia and around the world.
