Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption Ends, Level III Alert Remains

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of Indonesia announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, that the continuous eruption episode of Mount Anak Krakatau has officially concluded, though the volcano's alert status remains maintained at Level III.

According to comprehensive technical evaluations conducted through September 7, the sustained lava fountain phase that began on Friday, September 4, subsided by Sunday, September 6. Despite the cessation of continuous eruptive activity, geological authorities warned that the probability of follow-up explosive eruptions remains high.

Instrumental monitoring between September 6 and 7 recorded three eruption earthquakes, nine gust earthquakes, 93 low-frequency events, 98 hybrid/multi-phase earthquakes, four continuous tremor episodes, and one shallow volcanic earthquake. Consequently, the mandatory 3-kilometer exclusion zone around the active crater remains strictly enforced to protect against incandescent rock ejecta, heavy ash fall, pyroclastic density currents, and potential lava flows should continuous activity resume.

Volcanological authorities and geological evaluation teams outlined the ongoing hazard parameters and recommended public health precautions for communities in Banten and Lampung.

Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria detailed the analytical findings following the cessation of continuous eruptive activity. "Based on the results of a comprehensive analysis and evaluation up to September 7, 2026, the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III," Lana confirmed in Jakarta on Monday, September 7, 2026.

She emphasized that secondary eruptive hazards remain significant despite the decrease in continuous lava fountain phenomena.

"The probability of eruptions occurring in subsequent periods remains high, threats from incandescent rock ejecta accompanied by heavy ash fall are still potential hazards, alongside potential lava flows if continuous eruptive activity returns," Lana said.

The Geological Agency issued safety guidelines for residents, tourists and mariners across Banten and Lampung, urging the public, tourists and climbers to avoid all activities within a three-kilometer safety radius of the active crater.

The agency also urged communities in Banten and Lampung to remain vigilant, stay calm, disregard unverified information and wear face masks when outdoors to reduce the risk of respiratory problems caused by drifting volcanic ash. (Naura Sofia-EN)
