Indonesia Marks 78 Years of Its Women Police Force

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia marks Policewomen’s Day every September 1 to commemorate the history of women serving in the country’s police force. The annual observance is also an opportunity to recognize the contributions of policewomen in protecting and serving communities.

The history of Indonesia’s policewomen began on September 1, 1948, in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. At the time, six women were selected to receive police training following the need for female officers to assist in dealing with women and children.

The six women became pioneers of Indonesia’s policewomen force. They underwent special police training at the Bukittinggi Police School, marking an important milestone in the development of women’s participation in law enforcement.

The presence of policewomen continued to grow as the need for police services involving women increased. In addition to carrying out general police duties, policewomen have played an important role in handling cases involving women and children.

Over the years, the responsibilities of Indonesian policewomen have expanded into various fields within the police institution. They serve in areas including operations, criminal investigations, traffic management, community policing, and other police functions.

Policewomen’s Day also serves as a moment to appreciate the contribution of women to public safety and law enforcement. Their presence reflects the important role women play in providing public services and supporting law enforcement in Indonesia.

Seventy-eight years after the establishment of the policewomen force in 1948, its history remains an important part of Indonesia’s policing journey. Policewomen’s Day is not only a commemoration of the past, but also an opportunity to honor the pioneers and recognize the continued service of policewomen to Indonesian society.
