Govt Prepares Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Following NTT Earthquake

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has begun preparing for the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on August 15, 2026. The efforts are being carried out alongside the verification of damaged homes and the recovery of affected communities.

Acting Head of the BNPB Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, Berton SP Panjaitan, said the government is preparing a Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Plan (R3P) as the basis for determining reconstruction priorities. The plan covers the rebuilding of homes, bridges, schools, and healthcare facilities, as well as the restoration of social and economic activities.

“This document is important as the basis for rebuilding, including homes, bridges, schools, hospitals or community health centers, as well as rebuilding the social and economic conditions of the community,” Berton said during a press conference in Jakarta on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

The BNPB is also verifying and validating damage to homes in seven affected regencies. The data will be used to determine the level of damage, ranging from minor to moderate and severe, while ensuring that recovery efforts are properly targeted.

Meanwhile, the displacement situation has begun to show positive developments. As of August 30, 2026, more than 4,000 displaced residents had returned to their homes in several affected areas.

“We will continue to facilitate people and displaced residents who return to their homes,” he said. The BNPB is also continuing to distribute relief supplies and ensure that the basic needs of affected residents are met throughout the recovery process.

The government hopes the R3P can be completed and approved soon so that reconstruction in affected areas can proceed in a targeted and coordinated manner. In addition to infrastructure, the BNPB is monitoring the recovery of economic activities, education, healthcare, and other essential services in the earthquake-affected areas.
