Forestry Ministry Investigates Bromo Tengger Semeru Fire

RRI.CO.ID, Probolinggo - Indonesia's Forestry Ministry is investigating a fire in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Investigators are assessing the fire's impacts on soil and surrounding environmental conditions.

Two IPB University experts collected samples from fire-affected areas in Sariwani Village. The experts were forest-fire specialist Bambang Hero Saharjo and environmental expert Basuki Wasis.

Quoted from Forestry Ministry press release on Monday, August 31, 2026, they collected samples from five plots across the affected area. Samples included composite soil, intact soil, vegetation, and charcoal from burned areas.

One plot also provided soil from an unburned area for comparison. All collected samples will undergo laboratory testing to support the investigation.

The investigation considers ecological, social, and economic impacts from the national park fire. Authorities said conservation damage can affect communities and tourism activities relying on environmental sustainability.

Forestry Law Enforcement Director General Dwi Januanto Nugroho stressed accountability if criminal acts are established. “The impacts and losses must therefore be clearly determined through accountable examinations,” he said.

The investigation began on August 3 through an official assignment to gather information. Investigators requested expert appointments on 18 August 2026, followed by assignments on 19 August 2026.

Sample collection took place on 29 August 2026 under investigator supervision. The process involved forestry police and officials from Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Forestry Law Enforcement Office head, Aswin Bangun, said experts provide supporting data. “The samples will be examined in laboratories to obtain data needed,” Aswin said.

The sampling process was witnessed by national park and forestry police representatives. Officials documented the process through an official sampling report signed by experts, investigators, and witnesses.

The ministry will continue investigating based on field evidence and verified findings. Laboratory results will support further proceedings and determine subsequent legal measures.
