Govt Projects 3.88 Million Green Jobs from Indonesia’s Green Economy Transition

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Manpower projects that the country could generate around 3.88 million green jobs as the transition toward a green economy continues. The government is encouraging workforce skills development to ensure Indonesian workers are prepared to seize these opportunities.

Vice Minister of Manpower, Afriansyah Noor, said the transition to a green economy offers significant opportunities to create new jobs. However, these opportunities must be matched by a workforce capable of adapting to technological developments and changing industry needs.

“The opportunities arising from this transition are enormous because Indonesia has a large and strong labor force,” Afriansyah said at the Indonesia’s Sustainability 360 Forum in Jakarta, Thursday, August 27, 2026.

According to the 2026 Employment Outlook, the projected potential for green jobs provides room to expand employment opportunities while improving the quality of Indonesia’s workforce. The Ministry of Manpower is also adjusting competency standards to align with the needs of green industries, including through upskilling and reskilling programs for workers already in the labor market.

Afriansyah said three gaps need to be addressed to ensure workers can benefit from green job opportunities: information, skills, and access. Information on labor market needs must be accompanied by relevant skills and access to available employment opportunities.

“With a prepared workforce, the right policies, and the involvement of various stakeholders, the transition to a green economy is expected to bring broader benefits to Indonesian workers and society,” he said.

To address these challenges, the Ministry of Manpower has prepared five policy pillars: strengthening labor market information, updating competency standards, developing vocational training that responds to industry needs, strengthening job matching and placement mechanisms, and providing protection and decent work.
