Indonesian Diaspora Able to Hold Dual Citizenship Under Proposal

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has proposed allowing dual citizenship for certain Indonesian talents living abroad as part of efforts to maintain their ties with the country. He said the proposal is aimed at ensuring Indonesia does not lose highly skilled citizens because of career opportunities or commitments overseas.

He made the statemenstatement during his speech on the 2027 Draft State Budget and Financial Note before the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Friday, August 14, 2026. He said Indonesia has millions of people in its diaspora, including professionals with expertise that could contribute to the country's development.

“Indonesia has millions of people in its diaspora. Among them are outstanding scientists, doctors, engineers, artificial intelligence experts, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, and athletes, especially world-class professional football players,” Prabowo said.

He noted that some members of the diaspora have taken up citizenship in other countries because of their careers, family circumstances, or work and contributions abroad. According to Prabowo, Indonesia should provide an opportunity for them to maintain a stronger connection with their homeland.

“We must not force Indonesia's best talent to choose between opportunities to pursue their careers in the world and their ties to their homeland,” Prabowo said. He stressed that the country should be able to benefit from the expertise and experience of Indonesians who have built careers internationally.

The President described dual citizenship for selected talents as a strategic proposal rather than a policy that would apply broadly to all Indonesians living overseas. He said the government would focus on individuals whose expertise and capabilities are considered important to Indonesia's national interests.

The proposal covers a range of professional fields, from science and technology to medicine, engineering, business, the arts, and sports. Prabowo particularly highlighted Indonesian athletes competing at the international level, including professional football players.

The proposal reflects the government's broader effort to strengthen connections with the Indonesian diaspora and harness global expertise for national development. If adopted, the policy could provide selected Indonesians abroad with greater opportunities to contribute to the country while continuing their professional and personal lives overseas.
