Indonesia Pushes ASEAN Land Transport Modernization Through ATSP 2026–2030

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - ASEAN member states are strengthening land transport cooperation to address global challenges by enhancing connectivity, safety, digitalization, and the development of sustainable transport systems.

Director General of Land Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, Aan Suhanan, said reinforced regional collaboration is essential to building a transport system that is resilient and adaptable to global changes.

“Developing this land transport ecosystem is an effort to ensure resilience in the face of future developments,” Aan said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Aan delivered the remarks while opening the 35th ASEAN Land Transport Working Group (LTWG) meeting in Jakarta, where Indonesia is serving as both chair and host.

He noted that land transport serves as the backbone of domestic trade, global supply chains, and daily economic activity. However, geopolitical shifts, fluctuating fuel prices, global trade disruptions, energy‑transition challenges, and climate change require a collective response from ASEAN nations.

“Therefore, isolated national strategies are insufficient. To safeguard global supply chains and sustain global economic growth, ASEAN must respond as a united, coordinated, and adaptable community,” he said.

Part of this cooperation aims to accelerate the implementation of the ASEAN Transport Sectoral Plan (ATSP) 2026–2030, which serves as the roadmap for ASEAN transport development over the next five years.

“The ATSP guides us to strengthen regional connectivity through land transport systems that are safer, more efficient, integrated, and sustainable,” Aan said.

He added that ASEAN’s future transport agenda encompasses not only infrastructure development but also digital transformation and technological innovation.

Key issues discussed at the LTWG meeting include the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for autonomous vehicles, the digitalization of public transport, intelligent transport systems, fuel efficiency, and the development of Transit‑Oriented Development (TOD) areas.

“ATSP also encourages us to consider the future of mobility. Beyond infrastructure development, our cooperation is expected to continue growing, focusing on digital transformation, technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and transport inclusivity,” he said.

Indonesia supports the regional transport agenda through the implementation of the National Master Plan for Road Traffic and Transport Safety (RUNK).

The Ministry of Transportation is also expanding the use of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to improve traffic management and freight‑transport efficiency, while modernizing public transport services to make them more integrated and sustainable.

“As well as accelerating the transition to low‑emission transport, including the development of an electric‑vehicle ecosystem,” Aan said.

Through this agenda, ASEAN aims to build a land transport network that is increasingly integrated, safe, efficient, and low‑emission, while strengthening regional connectivity and supply‑chain resilience. ***
