RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - A total of 62 survivors from KM Mutiara Sentosa II fire remain on Masalembu Island, Sumenep, East Java, awaiting further evacuation by a National SAR Agency (Basarnas) rescue vessel to Surabaya’s Tanjung Perak Port under joint security escort.

Head of Operations at Basarnas Surabaya, Didit Hari Krinadi, said all survivors underwent verification upon arrival at Masalembu. The confirmed figure stands at 62 people--58 men and four women--all rescued from the ferry fire in Madura waters.

He assured that the passengers are generally in safe condition, though several require medical treatment from local health workers on the island. “After re‑registration in Masalembu, we confirmed the total number of survivors is 62, consisting of 58 men and four women,” Didit said in a press statement received by RRI on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

Basarnas Surabaya deployed rescue ships starting Monday, August 2, to pick up the survivors. Once the operation is complete, all passengers will be transported directly to Tanjung Perak Port for further assistance.

The joint SAR team continues evacuation efforts while ensuring survivors receive medical care and support during recovery.

“The Basarnas vessel is conducting the pickup. Survivors from Masalembu will be taken straight to Surabaya’s Tanjung Perak Port,” Didit added, stressing that safety remains the top priority throughout the evacuation.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana responded to allegations that KM Mutiara Sentosa II lacked lifeboats. He said the government will investigate the claims thoroughly to establish the facts behind the incident.

According to Suntana, the ministry cannot confirm the availability of lifeboats until the official investigation is completed. The allegation arose after some survivors reported jumping into the sea to escape the blaze.

“By regulation, all vessels--just like aircraft--undergo ramp checks and inspections,” Suntana emphasized. (Misni Parjiati)
