RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Automotive manufacturers are being urged to take a more serious approach to developing the electric truck market in Indonesia. This comes as the heavy-duty commercial vehicle sector is still considered to be lagging in the electrification transition.
A study by the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) shows that trucks make up only about 4 percent of the total vehicle population. Yet the more than six million trucks on the road account for around 30 percent of emissions from Indonesia’s land transport sector.
The issue was highlighted in theJanji Jangan Ngebul (Promise Not to Blow Smoke) campaign introduced at the Indonesia Net Zero Summit 2026. The campaign urges automotive manufacturers to play an active role in accelerating the electrification of the national truck fleet.
Campaign Leader Janji Jangan Ngebul, Rafaela Xaviera, said automakers’ decarbonization commitments should not focus only on passenger vehicles. “We want to make sure the truck segment gets equal attention too, because manufacturers have the technical capability and capital to accelerate this transition,” said Rafaela on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
She said the viability of electric truck technology has already been proven in several countries, including China and a number of European states. In Indonesia, the main challenges are more about charging infrastructure readiness, the local component supply chain, and upfront industrial investment.
Project Lead of Just EV Enter Nusantara, Balqist Aroma Bunga, said electrifying the logistics sector is directly tied to national economic and energy resilience.
“Transforming to electric trucks is not just an environmental issue, but an energy resilience strategy, so industry players need to see it as a future business opportunity,” said Balqist.
Meanwhile, Climate Program Manager of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), Kiara Putri Mulia, stressed the importance of including electric trucks in the national electrification agenda. She said transport-sector decarbonization cannot be achieved without accelerating the electrification of logistics fleets.
“Through the Indonesia Net Zero Summit 2026, we also want to make sure that the conversation about EV transition in Indonesia does not stop at passenger vehicles. Raising the issue of electric trucks in this forum is crucial so policymakers and automotive manufacturers realize that transport-sector decarbonization cannot be completed without electrifying logistics fleets,” said Kiara.
As a first step, the Janji Jangan Ngebul campaign will launch the official website janganngebul.com. The platform is being prepared as an information hub on green logistics, while also supporting public education on the development of electric trucks in Indonesia. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
