RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Mohamad Hekal, underscored that the resignation of the governor of the country's central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), Perry Warjiyo, will not disrupt the stability of monetary policy or the national financial system. He explained that the leadership transition mechanism at BI is clearly stipulated in the law, so there is no need for public speculation.
Hekal also urged everyone to respect Perry Warjiyo's decision and the personal reasons behind it. He also expressed his appreciation for Perry's dedication during his leadership of Bank Indonesia and his career at the institution.
"We must respect his decision to resign and respect his privacy, whatever the reasons. What is certain is that we must express our highest appreciation and respect for his contributions during his time as Governor of Bank Indonesia and throughout his career at BI," Hekal said in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as quoted by dpr.go.id.
In addition, Hekal explained that, in accordance with the Act on Bank Indonesia, Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti is now serving as acting governor until the president proposes a definitive gubernatorial candidate to the House. He believes Destry has sufficient experience and capacity to ensure all Bank Indonesia functions continue to operate normally during the transition period.
"She has also been a gatekeeper, particularly in controlling and managing the rupiah exchange rate against the dollar and other currencies. So, I believe she is quite capable of maintaining BI's performance during this transition period," he said.
Hekal also assessed that close coordination between Bank Indonesia and the government was a key factor in maintaining financial system stability during the transition period. With continued good communication, he was optimistic that public and market confidence would be maintained until a permanent governor was appointed.
"The most important thing is coordination between monetary and fiscal policymakers to maintain financial system stability. I believe this transition period will go smoothly while we wait for the President to nominate a definitive candidate for BI Governor to the House of Representatives," Hekal said.
"We express our gratitude for the assistance from the Norwegian government. Hopefully we can continue to protect Indonesia's forests, prevent forest fires and deforestation, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions for environmental sustainability," she mentioned.
