RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission I has approved the government’s proposal to receive defense and security equipment in the form of the Italian government’s Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier as a foreign grant.
Deputy Chairman of Commission I, Budi Djiwandono, conveyed the decision during a House plenary session on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. He said the approval was part of the constitutional mechanism for accepting grants from foreign governments or institutions.
The approval complies with Law No. 17/2003 on State Finance, which requires House endorsement.
Budi explained that the proposal had been discussed in a joint working meeting with the government on July 20, attended by representatives from the Defense Ministry, Finance Ministry, Indonesian Military (TNI) Headquarters, and the chiefs of staff of the armed forces.
“Commission I has approved the acceptance of defense and security equipment from abroad,” Budi said.
The Giuseppe Garibaldi is a Garibaldi-class aircraft carrier built by the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. Construction began on March 26, 1981, and the vessel was launched on June 4, 1983, before officially joining the Italian Navy on September 30, 1985.
The ship served for nearly 39 years before being decommissioned in October 2024. During its service, the Giuseppe Garibaldi operated as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft carrier and command ship in various military operations and international missions.
It is known for its ability to operate short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) fighter aircraft and helicopters. The ship’s motto is Obbedisco, meaning “I obey.” (Misni Parjiati)
