RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Four Indonesian citizens remain hostages in Somali waters, prompting calls for the government to intensify and carefully escalate rescue efforts.

House of Representatives Commission I lawmaker Yudha Novanza Utama urged the government to strengthen diplomatic initiatives and rescue operations following the April 21, 2026 hijacking of the MT Honour 25 tanker in the Horn of Africa.

“I express my deep concern over the condition of the four Indonesian citizens who, as of today, remain in captivity,” Yudha said in Jakarta on Monday, May 4, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Indonesian Embassy in Nairobi, for coordinating with Somali authorities and community leaders. However, he stressed the need for more comprehensive measures to expedite the hostages’ release.

The four Indonesians are Ashari Samadikun (captain), Adi Faizal (chief mate), Wahudinanto (chief officer), and Fiki Mutakin. They were seized by armed pirates while navigating a high‑risk shipping route.

Yudha said diplomatic efforts must be expanded through bilateral channels and international cooperation, describing piracy as a transnational crime requiring a collective response.

“We see gaps in the global maritime security system when international focus is divided. Pirate groups exploit these conditions with established patterns and organized networks,” he said.

He also called for stronger long‑term strategies to protect Indonesian seafarers. “Evaluating the protection system, including coordination with companies and compliance with international shipping safety standards, is crucial to prevent similar incidents from recurring,” said Yudha.***
