RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Government expands the national film ecosystem through intellectual property (IP) to increase the industry's competitiveness. The Indonesia's Ministry of Creative Economy/Creative Economy Agency emphasizes that films serve not only as entertainment products, but also have strategic value in driving broad economic, social, and cultural impacts.

This effort was one of the topics discussed when Vice Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, received an audience with Soraya Intercine Films, which is developing a sequel to the film 5 cm. Released in 2012, 5 cm attracted more than 2.4 million viewers and became an example of local IP capable of creating a multiplier effect, including by encouraging interest in outdoor activities and exploring Indonesia's natural surroundings.

"Films like 5 cm demonstrate that Indonesian creative works can have a real and sustainable impact, while also being a strong driver of the creative economy," said the Deputy Minister of Creative Economy during the audience held at the Autograph Tower, Jakarta, on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

The Ministry of Creative Economy is ready to facilitate collaboration through various strategic initiatives, including opening up cooperation with state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and strategic partners to expand film promotion in public spaces through public transportation channels, outdoor media, and content placement at various strategic locations.

"We want to ensure that Indonesian film IP can be closer to the public and have a broader reach," the Vice Minister of Creative Economy said.

According to a release received by RRI Voice of Indonesia on Friday, May 1, 2026 in Jakarta that the Ministry of Creative Economy is also encouraging the integration of films into national campaigns such as "Proud of Indonesian Creative Products," as well as early activation through re-screenings of the first film, 5 cm, in a group viewing format (nobar) in various regions as part of the campaign leading up to the sequel's release.

Furthermore, global promotional opportunities through participation in international forums such as the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) and international film festivals are part of efforts to expand the reach of Indonesian film IP to the global market.

The Deputy Minister of Creative Economy is also encouraging the development of the 5 cm IP through derivative strategies, including strengthening merchandising and collaboration with local brands. "The momentum leading up to the screening needs to be seized from the start. Merchandise development and collaboration with various parties can unlock the added economic value of the film IP," Vice Minister said.

Soraya Intercine Films welcomes this opportunity and hopes that collaboration with the government will strengthen promotion, access cross-sector networks, and facilitate wider distribution domestically and internationally. Soraya Intercine Films CEO Sunil Soraya stated that the latest sequel will present a fresher story with younger characters and explore a new landscape of Indonesia.

"We want to carry the same spirit of the first film, but with an approach that is more relevant for today's generation. The values of friendship, dreams, and love for Indonesia remain at the heart of the story," Sunil Soraya conveyed.

This audience marks the first step in collaboration between the government and industry players to strengthen the national film ecosystem to be competitive, sustainable, and able to generate broader economic impact.
