Indonesia Marks 400 Years of Syekh Yusuf Al-Makassari, Expands Global Culture

RRI.CO.ID, Banten - The Indonesian government commemorated the 400th anniversary of Syekh Yusuf Al-Makassari in Banten, Tuesday, April 28, 2026 as part of efforts to reinforce cultural diplomacy on the global stage. The event highlighted the enduring legacy of the scholar whose influence extended beyond Indonesia to Africa.
Held at the historic Banten Grand Mosque complex, the commemoration brought together cultural performances and intellectual discussions. The event also underscored Indonesia’s commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage internationally.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, emphasized Syekh Yusuf’s role as a figure who combined intellectual depth with resistance against colonialism. “Syekh Yusuf is a complete figure who united intellectual strength through his works with real action against colonialism,” he said.
He added that Syekh Yusuf holds a unique place in history as a national hero recognized in both Indonesia and South Africa. “He is the only figure honored as a national hero in two countries, Indonesia and South Africa,” Fadli Zon stated.
As part of the initiative, the government announced plans to establish a Syekh Yusuf Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. The facility is expected to serve as an Indonesian cultural hub and strengthen bilateral cultural ties.
“The Ministry of Culture is initiating the establishment of the Syekh Yusuf Museum, which will function as an Indonesian Cultural House in Cape Town,” Fadli Zon explained. He noted that the plan has been coordinated with local authorities and approved by President Prabowo Subianto.
The commemoration also featured educational programs, including intellectual discussions and a large-scale Quran manuscript writing activity involving hundreds of students. Visitors were able to explore exhibitions of historical manuscripts recognized under UNESCO’s Memory of the World program.
Through this event, the government aims to ensure that Syekh Yusuf’s values and legacy continue to inspire future generations. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s broader strategy to strengthen its cultural identity while expanding its influence through global cultural diplomacy.
