RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — Indonesia has officially launched the auction of key radio frequency spectrum. The Ministry of Communication and Digital pushes this move to expand 4G and 5G connectivity across the archipelago, particularly in underserved and remote areas.

The auction covers the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands, both considered critical for improving network coverage and boosting internet speeds. The process, which had previously been delayed, is now underway following the establishment of a dedicated selection committee.

“This process has officially begun, with the hope, of course, that the expansion of 4G and 5G services will reach even more people, including those in remote areas,” Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said at a press conference at Jakarta on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

The two spectrum bands offered in Indonesia’s latest auction serve distinct but complementary roles in strengthening national connectivity. The 700 MHz band is categorized as low-band spectrum.

It is particularly effective for wide-area coverage due to its ability to travel long distances and penetrate obstacles such as buildings and natural terrain.

This makes it ideal for rural and remote deployment where extending network reach efficiently is a key challenge. By requiring fewer base stations, the band can help accelerate coverage expansion while keeping infrastructure costs relatively lower.

Meanwhile, the 2.6 GHz band, a mid-band frequency, is designed to enhance network capacity and speed in more densely populated areas. Although it covers shorter distances, it can handle significantly higher data traffic, making it suitable for urban environments with heavy internet usage.

In addition, Meutya expressed optimism that the auction will accelerate network expansion and improve service quality nationwide within a relatively short timeframe. Further technical details, including timelines and auction procedures, are expected to be announced by the implementation team in the coming days.
