RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has accelerated the approval process for expanding measles vaccine use to adults. Head of BPOM Taruna Ikrar highlighted this decision as a data-driven approach to public health policymaking, aligned with global standards.

BPOM confirmed that the decision followed a rapid yet comprehensive evaluation process, including consultations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and independent national experts.

“We did not take this decision lightly. We conducted strategic consultations with WHO, engaged independent review committees, and carried out a thorough analysis of clinical data,” Taruna Ikrar conveyed in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 9, 2026.

The expanded authorization applies to a domestically produced measles vaccine developed by Bio Farma, which previously had been indicated primarily for pediatric use. The move addresses both supply and affordability challenges, as locally produced vaccines are more readily available and cost-effective.

“We certainly recognize that vaccine availability will be a key challenge moving forward. That is why the BPOM must take swift action,” Taruna Ikrar stated on the same occasion.

Indonesia’s status as a WHO Listed Authority (WLA) for vaccines further underpins the credibility of the decision, signaling that its regulatory standards meet international benchmarks.
