RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Member of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Syarif Fasha, stated that Indonesia’s current oil production remains significantly below domestic consumption needs, making fuel imports difficult to avoid. He explained that Indonesia’s crude oil production is approximately 600,000 barrels per day, while national demand reaches approximately 1.6 million barrels per day.

He said this gap means Indonesia remains dependent on fuel imports to meet domestic demand.

“With our oil production at around 600,000 barrels per day and demand reaching 1.6 million barrels, the shortfall must be covered through fuel imports,” Syarif Fasha conveyed at the Nusantara II Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, as quoted by dpr.go.id.

The legislator added that Indonesia’s fuel imports currently come from various countries, ranging from the Middle East to nations in East Asia and the Americas. This condition shows that dependence on imports remains a challenge in maintaining national energy security.

That said, he believes the government can reduce this dependence by accelerating the use of alternative energy, including encouraging the broader use of electric vehicles in society.

“The utilization of electricity-based energy, including electric vehicles, can be one way to reduce dependence on fuel,” the politician said.

In addition, Fasha also highlighted the importance of increasing domestic oil refinery capacity. This step is necessary so that Indonesia can process more crude oil into fuel domestically.

“If domestic refinery capacity continues to be increased, we will be able to process more oil within the country so that fuel imports can gradually be reduced,” he mentioned.
