Garin Nugroho’s ‘Merah Sebelum Fajar’ Enters Main Competition at TIFF 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian cinema has once again scored a major international achievement with director Garin Nugroho’s latest work, Merah Sebelum Fajar (Red Before Dawn). The film has been officially selected as Indonesia’s sole representative in the main competition program of the 2026 Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), where it will compete against 14 other selected titles from around the world.
“I was drawn back to the early years of independence because there are still many human experiences from that period that have not appeared on screen. In Merah Sebelum Fajar, we construct a journey to look at Indonesia during a time full of change. I am happy that this film will meet audiences for the first time in Tokyo,” said writer-director Garin Nugroho in Jakarta on Friday, October 2, 2026
Set in Indonesia in 1946, one year after the proclamation of independence, the film follows Frans (Nicholas Saputra) and four other characters from different backgrounds as they travel across the country carrying an important document. Along the way, they confront suspicion from people who should, in theory, be part of the same struggle.
As reported by Antara, Merah Sebelum Fajar stars Nicholas Saputra, Laura Basuki, Bront Palarae, Tissa Biani, and Nagra Pakusadewo.
Garin Nugroho co-wrote the screenplay with Dirmawan Hatta. The film is produced by Atarui Films in collaboration with JAGARTHA, Springboard, Trinity Optima Production, and IMAJINARI, with support from Laspro.
The 2026 Tokyo International Film Festival will take place in Tokyo, Japan, from October 26 to November 4, 2026. ***
