Indonesia-France Film "Happy Eyes" Promotes Cultural Diplomacy

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The collaboration between France’s Moana Films and Indonesia’s Jungle Run Productions on the film Happy Eyes has reinforced cinema’s role as an instrument of international cultural diplomacy.
By filming in Bogor and Tanjung Lesung, Indonesia’s natural wealth and cultural identity are being presented directly to global audiences.
Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya said international film production creates opportunities not only through the employment of local workers but also by driving activity in hospitality, culinary services, transportation, logistics, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and tourism.
He said international productions can generate broader economic impacts and open investment opportunities in Indonesia’s film subsector.
“We want Indonesian culture, natural environment, production crews, and talent to collaborate more extensively with international partners. This collaboration not only promotes Indonesia but also facilitates the transfer of knowledge and technology to support the national film industry as a means of global diplomacy,” he said in a statement received in Jakarta on Monday, August 10, 2026.
The ministry views the impact of film production as extending beyond the film industry. During production, demand for accommodation, food and beverages, transportation, logistics, and various supporting services generates economic activity in filming locations.
International films can also provide long-term benefits by promoting Indonesian destinations. Locations featured in films may become new attractions for tourists after release.
The minister said the government continues to facilitate international film productions by coordinating permits, visas, and the movement of production equipment into and out of the country.
“In supporting international film productions, we continue to collaborate to provide various forms of assistance. These include visa processing, location permits, and procedures for bringing production equipment into and out of the country,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
He said such facilitation is necessary to increase Indonesia’s appeal as a filming destination while encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI) in the film subsector.
Happy Eyes was produced over approximately 40 days in Indonesia, with main filming locations at Taman Safari Bogor and Tanjung Lesung, Banten.
The production involved around 40 foreign crew members and 180 Indonesian crew members. Executive Producer Joe Yaggi said about 70 percent of the more than 200 crew members involved were Indonesian.
He said the involvement of local crew members provided an opportunity to strengthen the capabilities of Indonesia’s creative workforce so they could work according to international production standards.
“The French crew members were very happy to work with our crew. They were very impressed with them. This is an opportunity for us. I hope there will be more films like this because our crew members can work at an international level,” Joe said.
With its natural wealth, culture, biodiversity, and available local talent, the government hopes more international film productions will choose Indonesia as a filming destination.
Such productions are expected not only to strengthen the national film industry but also to expand economic benefits across various sectors and regions. ***
