RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar) reported that Indonesia’s participation in Tourism Expo Japan (TEJ) 2026—held from 24-27 September 2026, at Tokyo Big Sight, Japan—generated a potential arrival of 5,600 tourists and an estimated foreign exchange value of US$7.168 million (equivalent to IDR 127 billion).
“This achievement signals market opportunities that can be capitalized upon by strengthening business communications and developing tour packages tailored to the interests of Japanese travelers,” said Ni Made Ayu Marthini, the Ministry of Tourism’s Deputy for Marketing, in a statement in Jakarta on Friday, 2 October 2026.
Indonesia’s participation in TEJ 2026 is part of an effort to strengthen market penetration in Japan through promotional strategies that are more interactive and business-oriented. Indonesia’s presence also served as an opportunity to showcase a diverse range of tourism experiences—spanning nature, culture, wellness, and gastronomy—to the Japanese public.
“The Japanese market holds significant potential for Indonesian tourism. Through our participation in TEJ 2026, we are not only showcasing Indonesia’s premier destinations but also building direct relationships with Japanese industry partners to unlock opportunities for sustainable collaboration,” Made stated.
According to a release received by Voice of Indonesia on Friday, 2 October 2026 this tourism trade show participated by 40 countries and featuring approximately 400 co-exhibitors, 500 booths, and over 44,000 visitors—the Wonderful Indonesia Pavilion occupied a 54-square-meter space at Booth G10, Hall E2, of Tokyo Big Sight. The Wonderful Indonesia Pavilion showcased eight Indonesian tourism industry players representing various sectors, including airlines, travel agencies and tour operators (TA/TO), accommodation providers, destination management companies, and tourist attractions.
These eight industry players were Garuda Indonesia, Wendy Tour, Menjaga Bay Hotel, Kuno Villas, DMC White Tiger Bali, The Yoga Barn, Adventure Indonesia, and The Mulia Resorts & Villas. In addition to promoting tourism products and destinations, the Wonderful Indonesia Pavilion featured a range of interactive activities designed to offer visitors a firsthand experience of Indonesia's richness.
One such highlight was the "Indonesia Coffee Corner," where baristas served premium coffee sourced from Temanggung, Central Java.
“These outcomes serve as a basis for strengthening Indonesia’s promotional strategy in Japan, particularly by leveraging Bali as a gateway to introduce other destinations,” said Made.
The Ministry of Tourism is encouraging the development of thematic tour packages that combine popular destinations with travel experiences in Labuan Bajo, Yogyakarta, Manado, Lake Toba, Lombok, and other premier Indonesian destinations. Promotional efforts in the Japanese market were also strengthened through a “Networking Dinner” held on 24 September 2026, at Cinta Jawa Café in Tokyo.
The event brought together eight Indonesian tourism industry players with 20 potential buyers from Japan, including travel agents, tour operators, and other industry partners. Structured as an informal dinner, the gathering aimed to foster more personal communication and build trust among industry stakeholders.
Through this forum, participants had the opportunity to showcase tourism products, explore business collaborations, expand distribution networks, and identify opportunities for developing travel packages to Indonesia. On the sidelines of the TEJ 2026 events, the Ministry of Tourism also held a meeting with Japan Airlines (JAL) in Tokyo on 25 September 2026.
The meeting addressed trends in the Japanese tourist market, strategies for developing the premium tourism segment, and opportunities for collaborative promotion through Familiarization Trip (Fam Trip) programs for Japanese travel agents and tour operators. One of the opportunities explored was the development of travel packages combining Jakarta with other destinations such as Yogyakarta and Labuan Bajo.
This collaboration aims to expand travel options for Japanese tourists, including maximizing opportunities to convert business trips into leisure travel.
"Through these activities, the Ministry of Tourism strives to continuously strengthen the promotion of Indonesian tourism in Japan by fostering synergy between the government and the industry, developing tourism products tailored to market characteristics, and expanding strategic partnerships with international tourism industry players," said Made.
