RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR RI) discussed strengthening cooperation with Thailand, especially in agriculture and trade, with the Secretary-General of the King Prajadhipok’s Institute, Issara Sereewatthanawut. The meeting was held at the Indonesian Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Head of the DPR's Indonesia–Thailand Bilateral Cooperation Group, Alien Mus, said the meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen ties between Indonesia and Thailand, which have been established for decades. The two countries’ geographical proximity is an important asset in developing various forms of cooperation.

"Cooperation is certainly important because we are neighboring countries that are very close to each other," Alien said, as quoted from dpr.go.id.

He said several sectors have the potential to be developed through cooperation between the two countries, particularly agriculture and trade. Commodities of interest include rice, palm oil, and silk, as well as various other products.

According to him, Indonesia-Thailand relations can be strengthened not only through trade cooperation but also through exchanges of experience in policy and regulation. The parliaments of the two countries can provide a platform for learning from each other about decision-making processes and the formulation of regulations implemented in each country.

"So we are establishing good cooperation so that these two countries can maintain good relations, both in terms of their products being traded with us and our products being traded with them, as well as regulations or laws adopted from Thailand by Indonesia," he said.

Alien added that cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand has been ongoing for decades. Thailand is also one of Indonesia’s export destinations, while the two countries maintain trade relations through the export and import of various products.

"There have been 76 years of cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand. This is not a short-term relationship; it has been a long-standing one," he said.

Meanwhile, Issara Sereewatthanawut said his visit was part of efforts to further strengthen the two nations' cooperation. He also invited members of the Bilateral Cooperation Group to visit Thailand next November.

He said the visit could provide an opportunity to exchange experiences in several sectors, including industry and agriculture, which are of mutual interest to both countries.

"We hope that the more than 70-year relationship between Thailand and Indonesia can be strengthened, not only through the executive branch but also through parliamentary diplomacy," Issara said.

He hoped that the longstanding relationship could continue to be strengthened through various forms of cooperation, including institutional ties and exchanges of experience between the two countries. The House said the meeting was part of its efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s relations with Thailand through parliamentary diplomacy, while also opening up broader opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of experiences on policies and regulations.
