RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – International Translation Day is commemorated every September 30 to recognize language professionals who help bridge communication across languages. The observance also highlights the importance of translation, interpreting, and terminology in promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among nations.
International Translation Day was established by the United Nations through General Assembly Resolution 71/288 in 2017. The date coincides with the death anniversary of Saint Jerome on September 30, 420, who is known for translating the Bible and is regarded as the patron saint of translators.
In 2026, the International Federation of Translators (FIT), has chosen “Linguistic Diversity and Language Rights” as the theme, with “The Power of Being Understood” as its subtheme. The theme highlights translation, interpreting, and terminology as important elements in promoting inclusion, equality, and participation in an increasingly connected world.
FIT underscored that language professionals play an important role in various fields, including law, healthcare, education, diplomacy, and humanitarian affairs. Their work helps ensure that information can be understood by people from different linguistic backgrounds while reducing the risk of exclusion caused by language barriers.
Translation also plays a pivotal role in international communication at the United Nations. UN documents are issued simultaneously in six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish, with translators responsible for conveying the content clearly and accurately.
Amid advances in technology, artificial intelligence-based translation is also expanding access to communication across languages. However, FIT emphasized that language professionals remain essential in maintaining quality, ethics, and inclusivity, particularly when working with languages that have fewer technological resources.
International Translation Day 2026 serves as a moment to recognize language as part of cultural diversity and the right to be understood and participate. Through the work of translators, interpreters, and terminologists, cross-language communication can continue to foster understanding among people in an increasingly multilingual world.
