Jakarta’s Waste Management Becomes a Highlight at U20 New York

RRI.CO.ID, New York – Aside from transportation, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, stated that waste management has become a special focus of the Jakarta Government at the Urban 20 (U20) Conference Afternoon Sessions in New York, United States, on Sunday, September 20, 2026. He affirmed that this is urgent given that Jakarta generates around 9,000 tons of waste every day.

“Jakarta generates around 9,000 tons of waste every day. The challenge directly affects mobility, public health, and the quality of life of our people,” he stated.

Several steps have been taken by the Jakarta Government, such as expanding green open spaces in collaboration with the central government and accelerating the construction of two waste-to-energy facilities. All of these initiatives are further strengthened by active community participation through independent waste-sorting movements and various local recycling programs.

the Governor explained, “Along with the central government, we are developing two waste-to-energy plants in Jakarta. Our waste management efforts are also supported by the community waste, waste sorting, Gerakan Pilah Sampah, and recycling. Our goal is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, while turning waste into a source of cleaner energy.”

Pramono also noted that these issues have a major impact on citizens' health and quality of life. Therefore, climate action in Jakarta must make the city cleaner, healthier, more affordable, and pedestrian-friendly.

He said, “Climate action must deliver benefits to the people, who can see and feel it in their daily life.”

Finally, Jakarta expressed its readiness to share successful local initiatives and learn from other urban centers worldwide. Ultimately, the city aims to turn shared climate ambitions into concrete and practical solutions.
