Indonesia Attends Inaugural Canada Investment Summit in Toronto

RRI.CO.ID, Toronto – Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, represented Indonesia at the 1st Canada Investment Summit (CIS) in Toronto, Canada, as cited from a written press release on Thursday, September 17, 2026. CIS is the first large-scale investment forum initiated by the Canadian Government alongside the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) to attract foreign investment into Canada.

The CIS Summit brought together approximately 100 global investors who collectively manage funds totaling up to US$120 trillion, including prominent names from the world's finance and investment industries. The forum was also attended by Canadian provincial leaders, Indigenous leaders, and delegations from various Canadian trade partner countries, including Indonesia represented by Coordinating Minister Airlangga.

In his keynote address, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, emphasized that his country is entering the largest investment period in a century. Canada is targeting US$1 trillion in investments over the next five years across key sectors such as energy, technology, and defense.

To achieve this target, the government announced new policies featuring tax incentives and expedited business licensing. Additionally, these policies include strengthening energy infrastructure and implementing stricter financial regulations.

PM Carney also outlined Canada's trade diversification strategy, which focuses on deepening relations with Asia, India, ASEAN, Gulf nations, and Europe, without abandoning its trade ties with the United States. He stressed that Canada seeks to balance the strengthening of national sovereignty while maintaining economic openness, alongside improving Canada's reputation in accelerating the completion of large-scale investment projects.

Coordinating Minister Airlangga explained, "Indonesia's presence at this inaugural forum serves as an important momentum to absorb Canada's future investment policy direction, while strengthening Indonesia's position as Canada's strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly with Canada's trade diversification plan that also targets the ASEAN region."

Accompanying Coordinating Minister Airlangga during the CIS Summit series were Indonesian Ambassador to Canada Muhsin Syihab, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso, Deputy for Economic Cooperation and Investment Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry Edi Prio Pambudi, and Indonesian Consul General in Toronto Vevie Damayanti.
