Indonesia Pushes for QRIS Integration with BRICS Countries’ Payment Systems

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia is pushing to strengthen technical cooperation among BRICS member countries, including through the interoperability of digital payment systems to facilitate cross-border transactions. Special Advisor to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Strengthening Multilateral Policy Issues, Tri Tharyat, said Indonesia would resume efforts to promote technical cooperation following the BRICS Summit, including the development of interoperable digital payment systems.

“Certainly, immediately after the summit, we will again promote technical cooperation. One area we are also pushing for is the interoperability of digital payment systems,” Tri Tharyat said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

According to him, Indonesia has an innovative product in the form of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), which could serve as an instrument to promote payment system cooperation among BRICS member countries. He cited India as an example, noting that the country also has a digital payment scheme that enables transactions directly via mobile phones without requiring the recipient to have a bank account.

“I think these things could serve as good examples. However, as one of our flagship products, namely QRIS, we will promote cooperation among BRICS countries,” he said.

In addition to digital payments, Indonesia is also promoting the use of local currency settlement (LCS) within BRICS cooperation. The move is part of efforts to reduce dependence on certain currencies in cross-border transactions.

“We are also pushing to reduce dependence on certain currencies and promote local currency settlement,” Tri Tharyat said.

Regarding QRIS, Tri has yet to disclose which BRICS member countries would become implementation partners or the targeted transaction value. The government has also not announced a specific timeline for the implementation of QRIS within the BRICS cooperation framework.
