Japan’s Disaster Relief Support Strengthens Indonesia’s Firefighting Efforts

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s fight against forest and land fires (karhutla) is set to receive international reinforcement, as three CH‑47 Chinook helicopters from Japan are scheduled to join operations between September 12–19, 2026.
The aircraft are en route aboard JS Kunisaki and scheduled to dock at Kijing Port, West Kalimantan, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense Lt. Gen. Tri Budi Utomo explained that the assistance is part of the Defence Cooperation Arrangement (DCA) signed between Indonesia and Japan on May 4, 2026.
“If all stages proceed as planned, the Japanese helicopters will be integrated into firefighting operations during the designated period,” he said in a press release, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Tri emphasized that the support does not shift Indonesia’s leadership in disaster response. “All national capabilities remain fully deployed. Japan’s assistance is integrated into Indonesia’s operations, reflecting humanitarian cooperation within the broader framework of diplomacy,” he noted.
The DCA includes a strong focus on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), underscoring how defense partnerships can extend beyond military cooperation to address urgent humanitarian challenges. ***
