RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The upcoming International Grand Imams Conference (IGIC) 2026 at Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta, is being positioned not only as a major religious gathering but also as a platform for strengthening Indonesia’s role in global religious diplomacy.

Scheduled for September 25–28, 2026, the forum will bring together around 400 grand imams from across the world, including Grand Sheikh Al‑Azhar and Sheikh Imam As‑Sudais.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar emphasized that the event reflects Istiqlal’s growing influence in international religious networks. “This conference is part of Istiqlal’s role in building global religious diplomacy,” he said in Jakarta, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Istiqlal’s international standing is reinforced by the position of its Grand Imam, who also serves as President of the International Grand Imam Association. Alongside IGIC, the mosque regularly hosts an ambassador gathering, bringing together about 40 foreign ambassadors to discuss issues of religious diplomacy.

“We regularly invite ambassadors to engage in dialogue on religious diplomacy,” Minister Nasaruddin explained.

He added that Istiqlal’s status as Indonesia’s national mosque makes it a symbolic venue for international relations. “Istiqlal is Indonesia’s pride. Whenever a foreign head of state visits, the mosque is always a mandatory stop after the Presidential Palace,” he concluded. ***
