International Literacy Day 2026: People, Planet, and Prosperity

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Literacy is a fundamental foundation for building a knowledgeable and skilled society, while providing people with opportunities to learn and grow. Every year on September 8, the world observes International Literacy Day, which marks its 60th anniversary in 2026.

UNESCO proclaimed International Literacy Day in 1966 during its 14th General Conference. Since 1967, the observance has been held annually to raise global awareness of the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right.

Marking its 60th anniversary in 2026, UNESCO has chosen the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.” The theme provides an opportunity to reflect on six decades of progress in literacy while addressing persistent and emerging challenges in a rapidly changing world.

Literacy goes beyond the ability to read and write. UNESCO considers it a foundation that enables people to gain broader knowledge and skills, develop values and attitudes, and participate more meaningfully in society.

Literacy is also closely connected to various aspects of life, including the enjoyment of rights and freedoms and the creation of more inclusive societies. It can help foster mutual respect, appreciation for diversity, and harmonious relationships between people and the environment.

Despite progress in recent decades, global literacy continues to face significant challenges. According to data published on the UNESCO website, at least 739 million young people and adults worldwide lacked basic literacy skills in 2024. UNESCO also reported that four in 10 children had not reached minimum reading proficiency, while 272 million children and adolescents were out of school in 2023.

International Literacy Day 2026 also provides an opportunity to strengthen policies, practices, and partnerships aimed at expanding access to literacy for all. Such efforts are expected to contribute to peaceful societies and sustainable development.

As part of this year's observance, UNESCO is holding the global celebration on September 8–9, 2026, in Chiapas, Mexico, in cooperation with the Government of Mexico. The event also includes the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, recognizing outstanding literacy programs making significant contributions around the world.
