Indonesia Pushes for Workforce Skills Development at ASEAN Forum

RRI.CO.ID, Bangkok – Indonesia pushes for workforce skills development and the protection of regional workers at the 29th ASEAN Labor Ministers’ Meeting (ALMM) in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 26–27, 2026. This strategic agenda was put forward to ensure that workers in the Southeast Asian region are prepared to face the rapid pace of digitalization and the dynamics of the global industry.

Indonesian Minister of Manpower, Yassierli, underscored that the challenges posed by shifts in the world of work due to the acceleration of technology and artificial intelligence must be addressed collectively. Therefore, strengthening labor market information, improving labor services, and providing comprehensive protection are the main focuses of the joint discussions.

This diplomatic initiative aligns with the implementation of follow-up actions to the ASEAN Declaration on Promoting Competitiveness, Resilience, and Agility of Workers for the Future of Work and its accompanying guidance document. The government considers this framework crucial for maintaining the competitiveness and resilience of the region’s human resources.

“We cannot face the changes in the world of work on our own. Indonesia must play a role in shaping the direction of ASEAN labor cooperation so that the ongoing transformation creates opportunities for workers, rather than leaving them behind, while continuing to provide protection,” Minister Yassierli said in a press statement issued by the Ministry’s Public Relations Bureau on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

In addition to preparing for future workforce competencies, Indonesia is specifically addressing the issue of protecting migrant workers and their family members during times of crisis. This protection also focuses on the placement of migrant workers in critical sectors such as fisheries.

To strengthen the impact of these policies, the government has established close partnerships with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This international collaboration is aimed at supporting the development of decent work and strengthening the infrastructure of employment services.

“ASEAN cooperation must yield tangible benefits for workers. It’s not just about discussing change, but ensuring that workers have the opportunity to improve their skills, secure better jobs, and remain protected in the face of change,” the Minister said.
