KJRI in Kuching Brings Immigration, Consular Services to Palm Oil Plantation

RRI.CO.ID, Melaka, Malaysia - The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Kuching extended immigration and consular services directly to Indonesian citizens through the Reach Out program held at a palm oil plantation in Mukah, Sarawak, Malaysia, on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

KJRI Kuching said the initiative reflects its commitment to protecting and serving Indonesians abroad, particularly migrant workers living far from urban centers. A total of 225 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) took part, accessing various immigration and consular services provided on site.

Consul General Abdullah Zulkifli emphasized that the presence of the state among its citizens is vital to ensuring services are accessible, fast, and responsive.

“We want to ensure that the state is present and felt directly by Indonesians, including those working in plantations far from the city,” Abdullah said on Monday, August 24.

Through the Reach Out program, migrant workers can obtain official documents without leaving their workplaces for extended periods or traveling long distances to Kuching. The initiative also served as a moment to strengthen national spirit in commemoration of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.

Abdullah reminded workers that every Indonesian abroad represents the country’s image. “Wherever we are, we carry Indonesia’s name. I encourage all migrant workers to work well, uphold Indonesia’s reputation, and help build positive relations between Indonesia and Sarawak,” he noted.

KJRI Kuching also urged workers to remain mindful of legal compliance and social resilience while working in Sarawak.

With Sarawak's vast geography and many Indonesians employed in remote plantations, direct service delivery is seen as a strategic approach to ensure equal access to consular assistance.

The program further allowed KJRI Kuching to hear firsthand the needs and aspirations of migrant workers, while providing education on rights, obligations, and available protection mechanisms.

KJRI Kuching stressed that serving and protecting Indonesians abroad is not merely an administrative function, but a tangible expression of the state’s presence.

Moving forward, the consulate pledged to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders and deliver services that are more accessible, responsive, and tailored to the needs of Indonesians in Sarawak. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
