RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Reem Alabali Radovan, highlighted Indonesia’s interfaith harmony as a global example during her visit to Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque and the nearby Cathedral on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Accompanied by Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar and Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, Minister Radovan praised the symbolic coexistence of the two landmarks. “I think this can be a model for many places in the world. Of course, we in Germany can also learn from it,” she said, as quoted by Antara.
Minister Radovan stressed that tolerance, friendship, and dialogue among religions are increasingly vital in a world facing multiple challenges. “This is very important, especially in difficult times like now. We need to see examples of tolerance, friendship, and dialogue such as this,” she added.
Her visit also formed part of broader bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Germany, particularly in development and economic sectors. Minister Radovan expressed admiration for Istiqlal’s use of solar energy, calling it a practical example of clean energy transition.
“I am very impressed to hear that this mosque uses solar power. It is a good example of how the transition can be implemented. We want to strengthen this partnership in the future, and I look forward to it,” she said.
German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste, who joined the visit, emphasized that German society values Indonesia’s way of living together across faiths. He noted that such examples are shared with German visitors to illustrate interfaith cooperation.
“From there, we could see how interfaith cooperation is fostered successfully in Indonesia. We then bring the stories back to Germany, sharing how well interfaith harmony and community life thrive in Indonesia,” she concluded. ***
