RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in San Francisco is strengthening ties with Indonesian diaspora in the United States by using the 81st Independence Day celebration to foster national unity, empower communities, and encourage greater contributions to Indonesia.

The consulate said the 81st anniversary of the Indonesian Independence Day highlighted its role as a bridge and unifying force for Indonesians living in the region.

“Through the momentum of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, the consulate reaffirmed its role in fostering and empowering the Indonesian community within its jurisdiction, while also serving as a bridge and a unifying force for the nation among Indonesians overseas,” the consulate said in a statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

The consulate said efforts to maintain nationalism, strengthen networks, and encourage diaspora contributions are expected to keep the spirit of independence alive.

With this spirit, the Indonesian communities and diaspora in the region are expected to continue creating achievements and supporting the realization of a sovereign, just, and prosperous Indonesia.

The Independence Day celebration organized by the consulate brought together more than 200 Indonesian citizens and members of the Indonesian diaspora from the Bay Area.

The flag-raising ceremony at the consulate was held solemnly and attended by various elements of the community, including diaspora and community leaders, academics, professionals, students, Indonesian military officers studying at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), as well as US citizens studying Indonesian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey.

Carrying the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia,” the 81st Independence Day commemoration served as an opportunity to view independence not only as the legacy of the nation’s founding figures, but also as a shared responsibility to uphold it through achievements, unity, and tangible contributions to Indonesia.

The presence of people from different generations and professional backgrounds demonstrated the strong national spirit and enduring love for Indonesia despite being far from the homeland.

Following the ceremony, the celebration continued with the cutting of tumpeng and various traditional August 17 competitions, including putting pencils into bottles, eating biscuits from the face without using hands, and sarong relay races.

As part of the Independence Day commemoration, the consulate is also presented certificates of appreciation to members of the diaspora and Indonesian partners for their contributions to the community and efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s presence within the consulate’s jurisdiction. ***
