RRI.CO.ID, Yaoundé – The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Yaoundé introduced Indonesian cuisine to the Cameroonian public. It was done through an Indonesian Culinary Safari in Tsinga Village, Yaoundé, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
According to an official statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Yaoundé received in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 18, the activity was attended by around 50 residents, particularly mothers and children, who enthusiastically watched the preparation of several Indonesian snacks. Three dishes were introduced during the event: bakwan (vegetable fritters), fried bananas, and fried cassava.
The ingredients used are commonly found by local residents, but were prepared using Indonesian cooking techniques and recipes. Local residents in Yaoundé were then given the opportunity to taste the dishes. The residents responded positively to the flavors of the Indonesian snacks.
“I am very happy. It turns out that ingredients we commonly use can be prepared in different ways to create unique flavors. I would like to try making them myself at home,” one of the residents, Madame Jamilatou said.
In addition to introducing Indonesian cuisine, KBRI Yaoundé staff also invited children to dance together to several popular Indonesian songs, including “Stecu-Stecu” and “Maumere.” The activity was part of a series of events commemorating the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day in Cameroon and served as a form of cultural diplomacy to introduce Indonesia to communities at the grassroots level.
The Indonesian Ambassador to Cameroon said the Indonesian Culinary Safari had become a new flagship program of the Indonesian Embassy in Yaoundé to promote Indonesia to the Cameroonian public through a human-centered approach. Similar programs, he said, would be held regularly in various communities across Cameroon.
Through the activity, the Indonesian Embassy in Yaoundé hopes more Cameroonians will become familiar with Indonesia through experiences that are accessible, simple, and enjoyable, while strengthening people-to-people ties between Indonesia and Cameroon.
