RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - More than 150 Indonesians and diaspora members in Geneva, Switzerland, marked Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day by strengthening national solidarity while expressing support for communities affected by the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Indonesian Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, said being far from home had strengthened the sense of national identity and concern for fellow Indonesians.

“Today, as we commemorate independence, our thoughts and concern are also with our brothers and sisters affected by the disaster in NTT,” Ambassador Sidharto said, according to a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Monday, August 17, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He emphasized that Independence Day celebrations overseas not only strengthen national identity among Indonesians abroad but also serve as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and concern for others.

Despite being far from Indonesia, the suffering experienced by communities affected by the disaster in NTT was also felt by Indonesians in Geneva, who expressed their concern and support from afar.

“The togetherness of the Indonesian community in Geneva reminds us that wherever we are, we remain one Indonesia, caring for and strengthening one another,” he said.

The Independence Day ceremony was held at the office of the Indonesian Permanent Mission (PTRI) in Geneva and attended by more than 150 Indonesians and members of the diaspora. They included students, university students, Indonesian professionals working at various international organizations, and other members of the Indonesian community.

Participants wore a variety of national attire, traditional clothing and Indonesian traditional textiles. The diverse patterns and motifs representing different regions showcased Indonesia’s cultural richness while reinforcing the spirit of unity in line with the vision of a sovereign, just and prosperous Indonesia.

During the ceremony, three members of the Indonesian flag-raising team carried out their duties solemnly and responsibly. One of them served as the flag bearer.

The Satyalancana Karya Satya Medal of Honor was also awarded to two civil servants in recognition of their service and dedication in carrying out their duties. ***
