Indonesia Condemns Attack on MV Tihamah in Yemen

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia has strongly condemned the attack on the MV Tihamah in Yemeni waters, which left two Indonesian nationals working as crew members injured and another still missing. Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Yvonne Mewengkang, said Foreign Minister Sugiono conveyed the strong condemnation during a phone call with Yemeni Foreign Minister Afrah Abdulaziz Al-Zouba on Wednesday night, August 12, 2026.
“He strongly condemns this attack and emphasized the urgent need to prevent further escalation,” Yvonne said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
Yvonne said that during the call, Foreign Minister Sugiono also expressed his appreciation to the Yemeni Government for its assistance and facilitation of various consular access needs for the affected Indonesian nationals. She emphasized that Indonesia remains committed to continuing cooperation with Yemen to maintain peace and stability in the region.
“We are committed to continuing to work together with Yemen to maintain peace and stability in the region,” Yvonne said.
Meanwhile, Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, said the two Indonesian crew members affected by the attack were confirmed safe.
She explained that one crew member sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and did not require hospitalization. The other crew member was injured and remains under medical treatment, but is currently in stable condition.
“As for the details of the condition of the Indonesian crew members, both have been confirmed safe. One sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and did not require hospital treatment. The other was injured and is still receiving treatment, but is currently in stable condition,” Heni said.
The third Indonesian crew member remains missing. Heni clarified earlier reports that had stated the crew member had died.
“We received confirmation through a note verbale from the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that the third crew member is missing and has not yet been found,” Heni said.
She said search efforts for the missing crew member are still ongoing. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also maintaining intensive communication with the Yemeni Government and will provide updates as soon as new information regarding the search becomes available.
The MV Tihamah was attacked in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic shipping route connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The vessel was carrying 11 crew members, comprising eight Pakistani nationals and three Indonesian nationals.
