Indonesia Establishes Special Desk in Cambodia to Tackle Online Scams

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian government has established an "Indonesia Desk" at the Cambodian National Police Headquarters to strengthen cooperation in handling online scam cases involving Indonesian citizens.
Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson II Nabyl Mulachela announced the initiative in Jakarta on Thursday, August 13, 2026. He said the establishment of the Indonesia Desk follows a visit to Phnom Penh in late July 2026 by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Havas Oegroseno, alongside an inter-agency delegation.
Participating agencies included the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Attorney General's Office, the Indonesian National Police, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK).
Nabyl said that the desk will expedite the handling of online scam cases, including law enforcement efforts and protection for Indonesian nationals who are involved or have fallen victim.
The bilateral cooperation also addresses financial regulatory aspects, particularly those related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), given the broad scope of cyber-scam operations and the need for cross-institutional coordination.
Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Heni Hamidah reported that 991 Indonesian citizens are currently in shelters across Cambodia, including in Phnom Penh, the Old Airport Cargo Terminal, Bati, Sihanoukville, and Siem Reap.
Between January and August 2026, a total of 12,583 Indonesian citizens sought repatriation assistance at the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, with 8,124 having successfully returned home.
"What needs to be anticipated is the change in the Cambodian government's policy regarding overstay fine amnesties," Heni noted, adding that the policy took effect in July 2026 and that the Indonesian government will continue negotiating terms with Cambodian authorities. (Diva Rifdah)
