RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and the Indonesian Navy have completed a joint sailing exercise in waters east of Taiwan, underscoring maritime cooperation as part of Indonesia’s broader naval diplomacy.

On Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026, China’s Honghe vessel and Indonesia’s frigate KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai‑332 concluded planned drills in the Pacific waters east of Taiwan, according to the Chinese Defense Ministry.

The exercise included ship formation maneuvers, at‑sea replenishment, communication drills, and a separation ceremony.

Chinese officers used tactical signal codes and flag communication to coordinate with the Indonesian frigate, while both crews executed flexible maneuvers and completed all training objectives. The ministry described the drill as reflecting “positive intent and practical cooperation to jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.”

Indonesian Navy spokesman Rear Admiral Tunggul explained that the Passing Exercise (Passex) was part of the ship’s return voyage from Vladivostok, Russia, where it had joined earlier drills. “Passex is a goodwill engagement common among navies worldwide, symbolizing naval brotherhood and maritime diplomacy,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

He added that KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai‑332 will conduct similar exercises with other countries along its route home, in line with Indonesia’s independent and active foreign policy that encourages mutually beneficial cooperation.

The drill’s location--east of Taiwan facing the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Sea--was outside Indonesian waters and distinct from the South China Sea. ***
