RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Tunis highlighted the historic and revolutionary meaning of independence as it launched the 81st Independence Day celebrations with the “Merdeka Summer Run” on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
Indonesian Ambassador to Tunisia, Zuhairi Misrawi, underscored that independence carries profound historical and revolutionary significance. “Independence is the right of all nations, as enshrined in our constitution,” he said in a statement on Monday, August 10, as quoted by Antara.
The event drew hundreds of Indonesians in Tunisia, beginning at the Ibn Khaldun statue on Habib Bourgaiba Avenue in central Tunis and finishing at Jalan Sukarno in Buhaira.
Zuhairi stressed the importance of instilling historical awareness among younger generations, particularly Indonesian students in Tunisia. He cited Indonesia's first President Sukarno’s reminder to “never forget history” (Jas Merah) and urged youth to embrace both historical consciousness and healthy living.
He also pointed to the friendship between Sukarno and Tunisia’s founding leader Habib Bourguiba as an example of solidarity to be emulated. “A healthy mind resides in a healthy body,” he added, linking historical awareness with lifestyle values. ***
