RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia is framing its film industry not only as an economic driver but also as a powerful instrument of cultural diplomacy. During a meeting on August 3, 2026, Indonesian Ambassador to the USA, Indroyono Soesilo and President of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) of the US Charles H. Rivkin, explored opportunities for collaboration.

Ambassador Indroyono emphasized how cinema can showcase Indonesia’s natural beauty, cultural diversity, and biodiversity to global audiences while strengthening international partnerships. The meeting also discussed co-productions that highlight Indonesia’s landscapes and traditions, stronger copyright protection, wider access to international distribution networks, and capacity-building programs for local filmmakers and professionals.

“Our natural and cultural wealth is a creative force that can be part of stories enjoyed worldwide,” he said, as quoted by Antara, on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Training initiatives are expected to benefit producers, writers, editors, and digital marketing specialists, ensuring Indonesia’s talent pool is ready for global competition.

The Indonesian Embassy in Washington pointed out that the domestic film industry generated USD 8.2 billion in 2022, contributing USD 5.1 billion to GDP and employing 387,000 workers. Globally, the film sector continues to expand, with box office revenues reaching USD 32.8 billion in 2025 and total industry revenues surpassing USD 112.9 billion.

Officials believe this momentum positions film as a pillar of Indonesia’s creative economy and a bridge for cultural diplomacy, strengthening ties with international partners while promoting the nation’s stories and values abroad.

This perspective underscores Indonesia’s ambition to advance through global film cooperation, expand its role in cultural diplomacy, and enhance competitiveness in creative economy growth. ***
