Indonesia-Australia Reinforces Air Force Partnership Thru Training Development

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) are strengthening defense cooperation thru the development of joint exercises, enhanced interoperability, education, and personnel exchanges. The commitment was discussed in a bilateral meeting during the Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Darwin, Australia, on Monday, August 3, 2026.
The meeting took place between the Indonesian Air Force Chief of Staff, Air Marshal M. Tonny Harjono, and the Chief of Air Force RAAF Air Marshal Stephen Chappell. The discussion focused on efforts to expand collaboration between the two air forces in addressing the evolving regional security challenges.

The Air Force Chief expressed appreciation for the RAAF's support during the implementation of Exercise Pitch Black 2026. According to him, the multinational exercise provided valuable operational experience for the Indonesian Air Force contingent while also strengthening interoperability thru joint flight operations.
"This exercise provides valuable experience for the TNI AU contingent while also strengthening interoperability and building trust thru joint flight operations," Marshal Tonny said.

In addition to evaluating the implementation of the exercises, both parties also discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in the field of air-to-air refueling, as well as exchanging experiences regarding secure communications, data link, and integrated air operations to enhance the air operation capabilities of both countries.
In the education sector, Indonesia and Australia are exploring the development of military education programs, enhancement of personnel competencies, and the organization of various courses and training to strengthen the capacity of air force human resources.
Meanwhile, Chief of Air Force RAAF Air Marshal Stephen Chappell, reaffirmed Australia's commitment to continue strengthening professional relations with the Indonesian Air Force thru mutually beneficial cooperation in training, education, and personnel capability development.
The bilateral meeting is part of strengthening the strategic partnership between Indonesia and Australia in the defense sector, while also supporting the enhancement of interoperability and readiness of both air forces in facing security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
