RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo has distributed essential supplies to Indonesian nationals affected by the earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. It was held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, through its Emergency Response Team deployed to the disaster-hit areas.

Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, said the deployment of the embassy’s Emergency Response Team was aimed at providing direct assistance to Indonesians staying at evacuation centers and ensuring that their immediate needs were met.

“Since the Kumamoto earthquake struck on July 28, 2026, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has been coordinating closely with Indonesian community networks in Kumamoto to monitor the condition of all Indonesian nationals living in the affected areas. Our Emergency Response Team will continue visiting several disaster-hit locations to deliver aid directly to those in need. We also urge Indonesian nationals to remain vigilant, as aftershocks are still occurring, and to follow instructions issued by the local authorities,” Kartini said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Sunday.

She also expressed her appreciation to the Indonesian community in Kumamoto for its active role in assisting with data collection and the distribution of aid to affected Indonesian nationals.

The Emergency Response Team, led by Hernawan Bagaskoro Abid, First Secretary for Consular and Protocol Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, distributed assistance to Indonesian residents in the cities of Uki and Uto, Kumamoto Prefecture. The aid included drinking water, instant noodles, rice, and medicines, which have become scarce in the earthquake-affected areas.

The aid distribution was carried out in cooperation with the Indonesian Students Association (PPI) Kumamoto and Fumaku to ensure that the urgent needs of affected Indonesians were met promptly.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, although daily activities in Kumamoto have gradually resumed, logistics distribution and public services have yet to return to normal. The purchase of essential goods also remains restricted as the logistics system in the affected areas has not yet fully stabilized.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Osaka continue to monitor developments, coordinate with Japanese authorities, and maintain communication with Indonesian community networks in the affected areas.

The embassy urged any Indonesian nationals affected by the disaster, or anyone aware of Indonesians requiring emergency assistance, to immediately contact the emergency hotlines of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo or the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka for further assistance.
