RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Deputy Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) at the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Bramantyo Suwondo, emphasized that parliamentary diplomacy plays a strategic role in realizing inclusive peace governance in the ASEAN region. He said that amid increasing geopolitical challenges, economic uncertainty, technological disruption, and transnational security threats, parliaments need to strengthen dialogue, build trust, and encourage cooperation to maintain ASEAN centrality.

Moreover, as Bramantyo said, Southeast Asia has a great opportunity to become a region of increasing global importance. Therefore, security and stability must be continuously maintained so that ASEAN can become a center for economic growth, investment, and various forms of regional cooperation.

"We want to ensure that the Southeast Asian region remains safe, stable, and everything runs smoothly so that all kinds of investment, economic development, cultural development, and other cooperation can grow from Southeast Asia," Bramantyo said after leading a panel discussion at the 17th Meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Caucus (AIPA Caucus) in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, as quoted by dpr.go.id.

He explained that the discussion's theme "Inclusive Peace Governance" stressed that peace is not simply defined as the absence of conflict or war. Sustainable peace, according to him, must also be built through social justice, equitable economic growth, and the participation of all elements of society.

"Peace is not just about a safe and stable situation, but also about the need for justice to be established in society and stable economic growth to create a longer-lasting peace," he said, as quoted from the House's website.

Bramantyo added that the AIPA Caucus forum serves as a platform for ASEAN member states to align their vision that regional security and stability are a shared interest. This understanding is expected to be translated into national legislation and various policies in each country.

Similarly, while chairing the panel session, Bramantyo emphasized AIPA's responsibility to ensure that peace governance in ASEAN remains inclusive, people-oriented, and responsive to various regional challenges. Parliamentary diplomacy is also considered to play a critical role in promoting conflict prevention, building trust, strengthening dialogue, and achieving sustainable peace.

Furthermore, Bramantyo hopes that strengthening peace governance will involve not only parliament but also academicians, civil society, community organizations, and various other stakeholders. He believes that inclusive collaboration is key to keeping ASEAN peaceful, resilient, and capable of facing future global challenges.
