RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Turkmenistan have agreed to strengthen cooperation in politics, the economy, energy, education, and multilateral coordination during the 1st Senior Official Political Consultation held in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The Indonesian delegation was led by Director General for Asia-Pacific and African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Santo Darmosumarto, while the Turkmen delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Ahmet Gurbanov. The meeting marked a new milestone in bilateral relations and reaffirmed both countries' commitment to expanding cooperation across various sectors.

According to a statement from Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs received in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, the two countries reviewed the implementation of existing bilateral agreements and agreed to accelerate the completion of several legal instruments. These include visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic and official passports, cooperation between prosecutorial institutions, efforts to combat money laundering and terrorism financing, as well as cooperation in youth and sports.

Indonesia and Turkmenistan also agreed to strengthen coordination at the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations on issues of mutual interest.

In the economic sector, both countries reaffirmed energy as a key pillar of their bilateral partnership. They agreed to deepen collaboration across the entire energy value chain, including infrastructure development, technology transfer, capacity building, and commercial partnerships. The two sides also encouraged stronger business-to-business cooperation and invited each other to participate in Trade Expo Indonesia 2026, the Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan (OGT) International Conference and Exhibition, and the Turkmenistan Investment Forum (TIF).

In addition, the two countries agreed to enhance cooperation in higher education, research, tourism, and connectivity through partnerships between universities, scholarship programs, academic exchanges, joint research, tourism promotion, and initiatives to strengthen people-to-people and business ties.

Indonesia welcomed Turkmenistan's interest in strengthening its engagement with ASEAN and supported its accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC). The two delegations also exchanged views on developments in Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, reaffirming the importance of dialogue, respect for international law, and multilateral cooperation in promoting regional and global peace and stability.

During the meeting, Santo Darmosumarto emphasized that the Indonesia–Turkmenistan partnership should form part of broader efforts to strengthen South-South Cooperation amid growing geopolitical and global economic challenges.

On the sidelines of his visit to Jakarta, Vice Foreign Minister, Ahmet Gurbanov, also met with Indonesia's Vice Foreign Minister Anis Matta, Vice Minister of Trade, and the ASEAN Secretary-General to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and exploring broader opportunities for cooperation.
