RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged Southeast Asian nations to unite in making the region a zone of peace, emphasizing that ASEAN must serve as a stabilizing anchor amid escalating global geopolitical tensions.
Speaking during the plenary session of the 48th ASEAN Summit at the Mactan Expo in Cebu, the Philippines, on Friday, May 8, 2026, he called on the regional grouping's member states to deepen cooperation, positioning it as a model of stability and harmony for the world.
“We must set an example. ASEAN must be solid, committed to peace, stability, dialogue, and collaboration,” President Prabowo said in an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat, as quoted by Antara.
President Prabowo warned that geopolitical rivalries only harm societies and hinder regional development. He stressed that dialogue and cooperation should remain the foundation of ASEAN relations.
“We must not allow competition to dominate. We must not let the past dictate our present and future. Indonesia is determined to build good neighborly policies,” he added.
The plenary session was opened by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., followed by deliberations where each leader presented their views on ASEAN’s current challenges and future outlook.
Also delivering speeches were Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. ***
