Indonesian Migrant Worker in Singapore Awarded Best Migrant Domestic Worker 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Singapore – Lasmitri, an Indonesian migrant worker in Singapore, was awarded Best Migrant Domestic Worker 2026 by the Association of Employment Agencies Singapore (AEA(S)). For 23 years, Lasmitri has cared for a Singaporean elderly women, Low Yip Hoo, and previously also looked after her husband until he passed away in 2010.
"I was 84 years old, now I am about 98 years old. I kept Lasmitri beside me, to take care of me," Low said, as quoted from the association’s video release on Thursday, 26 February 2026
Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times said that Lasmitri learned how to care for Low from nurses at work, including inserting catheters and feeding tubes. She began taking a two-year course during her days off in 2024 to learn elderly care skills.
In the AEA(S) release, Low's son testified about Lasmitri's role in his family. He said that the tasks Lasmitri has carried out have greatly eased the family’s burden.
"Lasmitri has been with us for 23 years. When my dad passed away, she looked after my mum... My mum also suffers from depression. So during that difficult period, Lasmitri is able to handle it by herself," he said.
"I'm quite grateful, because with her initiative and all the work she has done, it lightens our load," he stated.
At the awarding ceremony on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, Singapore’s Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower, Shawn Huang, said the award is not just about celebrating individual achievements but also "bonds of care" that "transform a working relationship into a meaningful partnership". He highlighted Lasmitri’s decision to undergo caregiving skills training, which enabled her to take on complex medical responsibilities.
"Her story exemplifies how investing in ongoing professional development and mutual respect can elevate the traditional role of a domestic worker into a valued, skilled healthcare partner at home," Huang said, as quoted from Singapore's Ministry of Manpower.
