RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Most influenza cases recover naturally and require no complex medical treatment. Specific treatments and antivirals are generally prioritized for patients with severe symptoms.
Pulmonologist Dr. Pompini Agustina Sitompul said influenza symptoms can vary considerably. “The disease causes varied symptoms and is generally self-limiting.”
Oseltamivir is not indicated for common coughs and colds, Pompini emphasized. The antiviral is intended for severe cases and vulnerable patients at higher risk of complications.

Severe influenza can involve breathing difficulties requiring supplemental oxygen, according to Pompini. Research indicates Oseltamivir provides limited effectiveness when administered to mild cases.
Meanwhile, pharmacologist Dr. Dewi Selvina Rosdiana also warned against inappropriate Oseltamivir use. In children, improper use can increase the risk of vomiting by 1.6 times.
Pediatrician Dr. Mulya Rahma Karyanti stressed preventing influenza transmission among children. “Children with coughs and colds should stay home from school and rest,” she said, as quoted from the Health Ministry website on Tuesday, 29 September 2026.
Parents should also separate eating utensils used by children with influenza symptoms. Children should learn proper cough etiquette by covering their mouth and nose.
These measures aim to reduce transmission through droplets or saliva particles. Parents should also limit children’s outdoor activities while they remain sick.
For longer-term prevention, health authorities recommend maintaining a clean and healthy lifestyle. Annual influenza vaccination is available from six months of age through adulthood.
