RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Secang wood (Biancaea sappan), historically known as Caesalpinia sappan, is an Indonesian medicinal plant widely used to produce natural red herbal beverages. The heartwood contains brazilin, brazilein, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds that contribute to its color and biological properties.

A study published in the journal Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin identified brazilin as the major pigment compound responsible for the characteristic red color of secang extracts. This compound has been investigated for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

One of the most unique values of secang is its natural coloring ability. Traditional Indonesian beverages such as wedang secang use the wood extract as a natural alternative to synthetic colorants.

Research has also explored secang compounds for antimicrobial and inflammation-related activities. Laboratory studies suggest that brazilin and related compounds may influence biological pathways involved in cellular protection.

The food and beverage industries are increasingly interested in secang because it combines cultural heritage with modern demand for natural ingredients. Extracts are being explored for functional beverages and botanical products.

Although secang is traditionally consumed safely, concentrated extracts require proper standardization. Further studies are needed to establish optimal dosage and clinical benefits.
